Used Excavator Shipping & Container Guide

Shipping extremely heavy machinery across continents is a highly specialized logistics operation. Choosing the correct shipping configuration saves thousands in freight costs and avoids port damage.

1. Primary Shipping Methods Explained

Depending on excavator tonnage and dimensions, there are three main sea shipping methods:

  • Roll-On / Roll-Off (Ro-Ro): The safest, most seamless method. The excavator is driven directly onto the vessel's enclosed deck. Ideal for premium heavy rigs but carries higher freight rates.
  • Flat Rack (FR) Container: Excavators exceeding 12 Tons are lashed onto flat rack platforms. Excellent for high-speed container ship dispatch. Demands highly professional steel-cable lashing.
  • 40HQ High Cube Container (Disassembled): The most cost-effective method for 5T - 20T excavators. The cabin, arm, boom, and counterweight are disassembled, carefully loaded and braced inside a standard container. Requires experienced engineers to load and reassemble upon arrival.

2. Professional Cargo Lashing and Protection Standards

Ensure your heavy exporter adheres to these strict lashing procedures before dispatching out of Shanghai or other major ports:

  • All-Steel Cable Lashing: Minimum 16mm thick high-strength steel cables secured to heavy deck-anchors.
  • Hydraulic Cylinder Protection: Exposed piston rods should be completely wrapped in anti-rust, shock-absorbent materials to prevent saltwater corrosion and damage.

Always verify your supplier provides direct ocean transport insurance and full customs documentation (SGS certs, export declarations, custom bills) for secure clearance.
